Green Theology, Grounded Spirituality: A Memoir of Waking Up
Can a spirituality with no dirt on it really call itself Christian? Some of us remember the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, meant to sound the alarm for a planet in trouble. Almost sixty years later, things have not gotten better but worse–perhaps because we have mistaken recycling and driving electric cars for love? Christians have powerful reasons to go deeper, with biblical teachings on the goodness of creation, the essential bond between all living things, and the divine choice of flesh as the point of contact between heaven and earth. Pope Francis led with earthly love in his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’, quoting a verse from Saint Francis’ Canticle of Creation that praises God for “our Sister, Mother Earth.” Our living kin. In her talk at St. Thomas More, Barbara will speak about how all of this came together for her in a cow pasture in northeast Georgia, persuading her that any Christian spirituality without dirt on it is a swindle, aiming to keep Christ at rest in heaven instead of alive on earth.
